"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Most people can supply a name and number for this quotation, even non-Christians, but the truly surprising thing is just how much Christians flex their muscles when they add things to this quotation that aren't even hinted at in the text.
Most Christians will add, well, for God so loved ME -- forget this "world," concept, sure it SAYS it, but it means me, me, meeeeeeeee. Shuck the dough and the ray, it's all about ME.
Then immediately after straightening out who the verse really truly madly and deeply pertains to, they clarify the next idea, that ain't nobody PERISHING, that's all a myth invented by the devil. Okay, yeah, so the text DOES say that only those who believe will have everlasting life, but we all KNOW that just ain't true, don't we?
