Why in the world did they stick
"If"
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalms 119:105
If it be possible, as much as you got, you should live at peace with everybody. "If it be possible," hmmm, isn't that just another way for the Apostle Paul to express: "Hey, it ain't possible, so kill your neighbor before he kills you!" Or is the Apostle Paul merely using an expression, such as: "When you get the chance, live peacefully." The ball is in your court. When an opportunity presents itself, you take the bull by the horns and live peacefully, you choose peace, you give peace a chance, you say peace not drugs, you peace meal and have a peace of pie. Peace baby.
If it be possible. That is not so complicated, is it? It is a simple expression, easy to understand.

And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
Acts 27:39
The Apostle Paul is on a ship during a storm and things aren't looking so good, and the people in charge, after throwing out all the cargo to lighten the ship, head for an inlet where they might find some peace -- if it is possible, they want to live.
Nothing mysterious here, is there? No great interpretive skills. It is an expression. We're aiming for that inlet, if it is possible we need to crash our boat right there. Is it possible? That's the question, and the ball is in the sailor's court, so to speak. It's up to them.

...Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
Acts 20:16
Here is the expression again, if it's possible Paul needs to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. Notice, the Bible is not spelling out that Paul has no chance of making it, just that it is his intention of making it to Jerusalem in time to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost.
The impetus is on Paul, he's taking action. Will he make it, or will he not? We don't find out until later whether he makes it or not. He might make it. And maybe he won't. But Paul is taking action, as he wants to make it. Simple, is it not? Not too mysterious!

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Matthew 24:24
Jesus, addressing His Disciples, tells them about in the Last Days how people will say that Jesus is coming secretly (see Verses 26-27), that it will be false christs doing the deceiving, "false anointed ones," the false prophets. And Jesus employs the same expression that Paul later uses, that if they get the chance these false prophets and false anointeds will even fool God's chosen people, the very elect.
Well, will they? Will the elect be deceived? It is not stated in the verse, just like when the sailors are aiming their boat at an inlet, if possible, to land safely, avoid disaster. We don't know until later. The same thing holds true here, Jesus is saying: "Don't let them fool you, because you give them half a chance and THEY WILL FOOL YOU!"
So even in the context, Jesus is admitting: "You CAN be deceived, but don't." If we couldn't have been deceived, if it were impossible, then
Jesus would have had absolutely NO reason to says this, in command form:
And Jesus answered and
said unto them, Take heed
that no man deceive you.
For many shall come in my
name, saying, I am Christ;
and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:4-5
It is an expression Jesus uses, "If they get the chance, they will deceive you, so don't give them the chance!" It is an actual command: "Take heed that no man deceive you."
Yet, false teachers twist and mangle these verses to "prove" that Christians cannot be deceived, that the "Elect of God" cannot be deceived, thus negating Jesus' very command. That's what they are doing, they are claiming that Jesus is dead wrong here to be telling His Disciples "don't be deceived," because it is impossible to be deceived!

And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
Mark 13:20-22
And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name , saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.
Luke 21:7-8
The Good News is, if you are following Jesus, you do not have to be afraid of all the terrible things and calamities. Um, but then the bad news. If you have been taught that you cannot be deceived, these few verses prove you absolutely wrong. What has been taught to you is an absolute LIE.
If you have been taught that you cannot be deceived, then the terrible news is, YOU ARE DECEIVED. You are not following Jesus, but another, a false jesus, you are following those that came out of Christianity, that claims to follow Jesus, but they "keep not His commandments!" Get out, now!

False Christianity is more deadly than ANY pagan threat, any natural calamity or war or rumor of war -- IT IS WHAT JESUS WAS WARNING YOU ABOUT! And it should be painfully obvious, if you have access to a television set, that it is happening, exactly what Jesus prophesied, right now, all around you. The Good News is, it is still not too late. Though deceived, you are not lost, not yet.
The key is NOT what church you belong to, or how you cut your hair, or if you wear pants or not, or if you wear a WWJD bracelet or not. The key is to get into a personal relationship with God, right now. You don't have to tell anybody about it or send in a pledge or buy a book or commit 30 days to a program or sign an oath, just go to a quiet place and talk with God. Tell Him you want the TRUTH, not lies, even if it going to be painful to cast off all the old traditions and man-made rules, the half-truths and the outright lies
Commit to the Truth, right now. Commit yourself to accepting the Truth, even if you don't like it, even if it makes you squirm, even if it goes against everything you've ever been taught in your life, even if it goes against what your most trusted fellows believe or teach. Talk to God, right now, and tell Him you want the TRUTH.
Ask Him to fill you, and lead you into all Truth, that you want HIM, and not a lie.
There is hope!
